BACKGROUND:
Founded in 1985 at the urging of San Diego’s business community, CONNECT is a non-profit organization dedicated to creating and sustaining the growth of innovative technology and life science businesses throughout the San Diego region.
Since its inception, CONNECT has assisted in the formation and development of hundreds of companies and is widely regarded as the nation’s most successful regional program linking inventors and entrepreneurs with the resources they need for success.
On July 24, 2007, our Board of Supervisors received a report from Duane Roth, the Chief Executive Officer of CONNECT, on the progress and challenges facing the technology and life sciences community. Today’s recommendation is to receive an updated report from Mr. Roth.
Challenges that technology and life sciences businesses face include a downward trend in venture investing over the past three quarters, as shown in the CONNECT’s most recent quarterly report (attached). On the positive side, the county’s innovation economy is well-positioned to benefit from a $10 billion grant program administered by the National Institutes of Health and from federal economic stimulus programs.
Respectfully submitted,
PAM SLATER-PRICE RON ROBERTS
VICE CHAIRWOMAN SUPERVISOR, FOURTH DISTRICT
