Overview

This year marks the 25th anniversary of San Diego’s trauma system. During this time, more than 150,000 patients have been treated at one of the six countywide trauma centers. While being tested by several significant tragedies our system has remained a national model for effective trauma care delivery.
To commemorate this anniversary the Trauma Research Education Foundation, the system’s medical providers and the County of San Diego have initiated a campaign to prevent traumatic injuries by promoting safe activities. In addition, the three entities commissioned an educational video called “Truth About Trauma.”

BACKGROUND:
The trauma system in San Diego County was established by the Board of Supervisors in 1984 with on-going oversight responsibility coming from the County’s Health and Human Services Agency, Division of Emergency Medical Services. It consists of five adult and one pediatric trauma center: Palomar Medical Center, Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla, Scripps Mercy Hospital San Diego, Sharp Memorial Hospital, University of California San Diego, Medical Center and Rady Children’s Hospital.
Of the hospitals, five serve defined geographic regions of the county known as “catchment areas.” Rady Children’s Hospital serves patients ages 14 and under throughout the entire county. The centers are specially staffed and outfitted 24/7 with surgical and medical specialists, as well as the technology and equipment needed to treat the most critically injured.
The number of patients admitted to trauma centers in San Diego County each year has doubled since the system was established, from about 4,500 in the mid-1980s to more than 9000 annually for each of the past five years. According to the annual San Diego County Trauma System Report, the system consistently shows a 95 percent survival rate for trauma patients who are admitted to a designated trauma center. Unfortunately, trauma continues to be the leading cause of death for people forty-four and younger.
Since the inception of San Diego’s trauma system, the preventable death rate from major traumatic injury in San Diego County has fallen from 22 percent to less than two percent. Thousands of lives have been saved and countless family tragedies averted due to the foresight and dedication of all those involved in making San Diego’s trauma system what it is today.
