Report Card on Children & Families

The 2009 edition of the Report Card was released by the County Board of Supervisors on February 9, 2010. This new Report Card provides trend and comparative data illustrating the health and well-being of our children and families in the domains of health, education, welfare, and economic support. This Report Card contains two new economic indicators added to better reflect the economic welfare of our county: use of Food Stamps and Poverty at 200% of the Federal Poverty Level. In addition, this Report Card assesses progress on previous recommendations for change, showing local successes. In response to community requests, the maps show data in more specific local detail.

The 2009 Report Card shows that progress was made for 14 indicators, including health coverage, oral health, school achievement, Food Stamps, child abuse, domestic violence and injuries. San Diego County performance is better than both California and the nation for rates of infant mortality, child mortality, breastfeeding, immunization, enrollment in early care and education, health coverage, and poverty. The Report Card also points out the need for increased efforts to reduce youth substance abuse, youth drinking and driving, and to increase rates of prenatal care.
